Who We Are
CSHC of IL is a local support and information group formed in April of 2002.  Our goal is to give families who have children with hemiplegia and/or who suffered an infant or childhood stroke, a chance to connect and interact in person.  Hemiplegia is often referred to as hemiparesis and for the purposes of our group, also includes hemiplegic cerebral palsy, diplegia, triplegia and monoplegia.  A large percentage of the children in our group have suffered a prenatal stroke, perinatal stroke, infant stroke, in-utero stroke or childhood stroke.  We provide support and local resource information for these families, as well as parent meetings with guest speakers, and family events.

We started with a core group of six families.  We now have over 70 families and continue to grow.  Families come from the metropolitan Chicago area, northwestern Illinois, Wisconsin and northeastern Indiana to meet and share a common bond.  Parents are introduced to the group by the efforts of current participants, who network with doctors, therapists, service providers and researchers.  CSHC of IL is a self-sustaining group, relying on participants to donate their services in order to further the mission of awareness and support.

In January of 2006, CSHC of IL incorporated and we are now recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) organization. Our newly formed Board of Directors and Officers are dedicated to continuing the mission of CSHC of IL.  Our board members bring a very diverse set of skills, background and experience which include professional grant writing, marketing, fund raising, occupational therapy and a medical professional.  All of the board members have experience in either parenting a child with hemiplegia or have worked professionally with children who are similarly affected.

Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove and the Good Samaritan Professional Building, Naperville have generously donated rooms for our parent support group meetings and conferences. Professionals in the community donate their time and expertise to our families, providing presentations about various topics to the parent support group. Our group has also compiled a list of doctors and other specialists who are involved in the care of our children, which is shared with the families who have registered with us.  Along with providing resources for our families, we also provide opportunities for our children and families to socialize. We've been to Bengston's Pumpkin Farm, the DuPage Children's Museum, McCollum Park in Downers Grove and will provide many more opportunities for families to get together.

Please take a look at our upcoming meetings and family events. We have many activities planned for 2008 and we hope you can join us soon. New families are welcomed and encouraged to register, sign up for our email list or attend any of our meetings or events.  For more information on Childhood Stroke and Hemiplegia Connections of Illinois, contact info@cshconnections.org.
